Healthy Eating for Better Living

A practical guideline to help you choose healthy food to keep you strong during illness.

Healthy eating is important to everyone, but if you are living with an illness, it is even more important to make wise food choices!

Healthy eating means eating foods that will provide your body with all the nutrients it needs to work well and help to fight infections.

Nutrients are substances found in food. There are different nutrients in food, namely proteins, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins and minerals.

Why is Healthy Eating so important when you are ill? If you have a chronic illness (like TB, Cancer or AIDS), your body’s immune system is weakened. This means that your body is no longer able to defend itself as good as it used to against infections.

A weakened immune system can lead to infections in the mouth, throat and stomach. Healthy eating will provide your body with nutrients to strengthen your immune system to fight infections.

No food will heal you from a chronic illness, but eating healthy will ensure that your body gets enough energy and other nutrients to:

* recover faster from an infection;

* increase your body strength;

* give you a feeling of well-being; and

* help you to enjoy a better life.

Healthy eating will help you to fight infections and help you to cope better when you are ill. Illnesses like TB, cancer or AIDS often leads to poor nutrition.

This is because:

* the body needs more nutrients to fight infections;

* infections can cause poor appetite and eating problems;

* infections and medication can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea that lead to a loss of nutrients.

Poor nutrition makes the body’s immune system weaker, and therefore easier to get infections. In the case of HIV infection, poor nutrition may lead to AIDS much faster.

How can I Eat Healthy?

There are many ways to eat healthy. Your body needs many different foods.

On its own no food contains all the nutrients your body needs. Choose and enjoy food that is easily available, affordable and that you like.

When living with an illness, the following guidelines can help you to choose a healthy eating pattern: Start Early! Pay extra attention to what you eat as soon as you know you have an illness.

Eating healthy can help to fight infections and prevent weight loss. Enjoy a variety of Foods To get the most from your food, eat a wide variety of the foods available to you.

Eating different foods will help ensure that you get all the nutrients your body needs from your food. If you struggle to eat large meals, try to eat small meals, frequently through the day to make sure you eat enough. Make Starchy Foods the Basis of most Meals Starchy food such as bread, porridge, cereals, rice, potatoes, samp, mealies, sorghum and pasta should make out the biggest part of each meal.

Starchy foods gives the body energy and other nutrients to work well.

Add any other foods such as vegetables, dried beans, chicken or eggs that you have available to the starchy foods to form a good meal. Eat plenty of Vegetables and Fruits Every Day Vegetables and fruits supply lots of vitamins and minerals and other substances that will help to protect your body against infections.

Chicken, Fish, Meat, Milk or Eggs could be Eaten Daily. Foods from animals give our bodies many different nutrients. One of these is protein, which helps to strengthen your body’s immune system and build strong muscles. When you are ill, you will need more of these foods.

Eat Dry Beans, Peas, Lentils and Soy Products Regularly This group of foods from plant sources are good sources of protein and other important nutrients. Including these foods as part of a healthy eating pattern will help in the fight against infection. Include Sugars, Fats and Oils in your Foods Sugar, fats and oils are also part of a healthy eating pattern. They give you extra energy to cope with illness and make food tastier.

Use Salt Sparingly All people should try to use less salt, since too much salt may contribute to high blood pressure.

However, if you have diarrhoea or vomit, a lot of salt and water is lost. Make sure that you replace the salt and water, by drinking a mixture of salt, sugar and water (1 liter of cooled boiled water + 8 teaspoons of sugar + 1/2 teaspoon of salt) as often as possible

What Should I Do About Liquids? Drink Lots Of Clean, Safe Water Drinking water is important for everyone. Drink enough water to make sure you replace water that is lost during diarrhoea, vomiting and night sweats.

Water from taps is usually safe, but rather boil and cool water from a well, river or borehole before drinking it. Do Not Take Alcoholic Drinks Do not drink any alcoholic drinks. Alcohol is harmful to the liver and causes the body to lose vitamins that protect the body against infections.

It is also very important not to take any alcohol when you are using medication because it will damage your liver.

Be As Active As You Can Be as active as you can to keep your muscles strong. Physical activity such as walking, cleaning the house and gardening will improve your feeling of wellbeing. Always Eat Safe, Clean Food! It is very important that the food and water you eat and drink should be very clean to prevent food from causing food-borne infection.

Remember:

* Always wash your hands with soap before and after touching foods.

* Wash all utensils and surfaces where you work with food.

* Cover food to prevent contact with insects and animals.

* Wash fruit and vegetables thoroughly in clean, safe water.

* If you cannot wash fruit and vegetables clean enough, remove the skin.

* Look at the “sell by date” on the packaging. Make sure you do not buy food if the date has expired.

* It is not safe to use tinned food if the tin is damaged or bulging.

* Make sure not to eat raw meat, poultry, fish or eggs.

* Cook food well to destroy germs.

* If you have a refrigerator, put all leftover foods in the refrigerator or store it covered in a cool place.

* Cooked food should not be stored for more than one day and should be re-heated before eating.

* Store food in a place as cool as possible. Try not to let cooked food stand at room temperature for more than two hours. The Benefits of Healthy Eating.

Sangria is a wine fruit punch, generally served as a summer drink in the Spain. It is originated from warm Mediterranean region. Its amazing taste have made it a popular drink throughout the world. Sangria was introduced to world at New York World’s trade fair held in 1964. In the New York trade fair, Sangria was served at Spanish world area. It was a huge success there. As it gained more and more popularity and was accepted by people worldwide, Sangria was soon imported under the label Yago Sant’gria.

Red wine, fresh juices, fruit and soda are the ingredients when mixed together form traditional Sangria. Sangria can also be prepared by replacing red wine by white. It is than called sangria blanca. Why I cannot resist a pizza?

If you have ever experienced making pizza from your kitchen you will know the answer – the smell as it cooks! You cannot afford to miss good preparation, and if you have the time, make your own dough. You can buy freshly prepared dough from most good supermarkets, if you can’t spare the time to make your own.

Any food that you can enjoy from home should fill the room and whet the appetite, such as Chinese takeaway which has a unique freshness.

I am a recent convert to home-made pizzas, but like everyone else, I have been inspired by a particular takeaway or restaurant experience. Nearby is restaurant on the seafront, which is known for its pizzas and its entertainment. i think the Italians and Spanish are untouchable for entertainment value, as I love the combination of tasty meals and a bit of fun. In Spain, particularly in Asturias, they have there own method of pouring the local cider or ‘sidre’. The drink is served by the waiter in a trance state, who pours from above his head into a glass on the table. Totally pointless activity – but worth watching!

The Italians like to show off their dough preparations skills, which mask the importance of the ritual in the taste of the pizza. The secret of a great pizza, according to them, is the preparation at the start, and the correct temperature in the oven. The dough becomes very soft and you can need it easily. I have first hand experience of this, because they bring it round to your table and let you try the technique for yourself! They are masters of the art of ’spinning’ the dough, helping to create the familiar shape that we all know.

When fully prepared with all the toppings and trimmings, it is ready to go into the oven. You are able to smell this wonderful aroma about 10 to 15 minutes later from the oven. You are not limited to being inside whilst enjoying your meal. If the weather is warm enough, you can watch the fun and then take your food on to the nearby beach! Tasty food, unforgettable sunset and perfect company – what more could you want!

Sports and finding out how to succeed is a real funny thing.you can take someone who is a great athlete, yet they can’t make it.Then you might have someone who is average at best yet becomes super successful.At first look it doesn’t seem explainable.But when you look closer you see the primary reason some have success while some fail is the mind.But what is the reasons for that?In this article we are going to examine it a little closer.

So how come the mind is so important in sports?  As a San Diego sports psychologist I have been priveleged to see first hand why this is so.First thing to realize is the fact that the stereotype of big dumb athletes is false.Athletes are really some of the smartest people around.  And the most successful ones use are successful because they know how to use the mind.

Funny thing a lot of athletes come in needing my anger management San Diego practice.Quite a few times the anger begins because they have failures in sports.But what I can do is help them turn it around.The way to really help them is to show them how failure begins within the mind.By learning how to use the mind effectively, they can accomplish great things.It has been shown to be true over and over again.

One of the hobbies that is most popular is photography.  People all over the world love to take photos.  For some people though they can turn it into a second income.  For those that are really talented they can turn it into a business.  But the only way to do that is to know how to take better pictures. So here are some methods you can use to be a better photographer.

One thing you should always do is practice.  This goes without saying but you should do it.Thankfully the people who will be reading this will be people who have a love for photography.  So doing practice will be doing something you love.  In my San Diego photographer business when I am not on the job but just practicing, I love it.That is what is so good about photography.It could be something you do as a hobby, but if you can earn money with it, that will make it fun.

Another way to get better is to take shots of a wedding you might attend.You just may have someone you know getting married.If you have some, what you can do is check to see if they will allow you to take photos of their wedding.They won’t be upset if someone else is also going to take more photos.  As a San Diego wedding photographer that is how I started.They might or might not be willing to pay you for your photography.  Either way it will gain you valuable experience.  Since some of the biggest jobs will be weddings.

Finally you can go to events.  Another big job you could do as a photographer is event photography.  I do event photography San Diego and it is a lot of fun. And when you can earn extra money by doing it, that makes it even more fun.It is going to allow you to gain some great experience by taking photos of huge events.  You will get valuable experience catching all those wonderful moments.
